Choose a first Warhammer 40,000 army by the models you want to build and paint, the games you intend to play and the collection you can support. A faction label or current ranking does not establish the easiest hobby project or most forgiving rules for every newcomer.
Identify the current starting box
Games Workshop’s July 11, 2026 starter-set overview identifies the new complete Starter Set as Space Marines and Orks, with 46 miniatures forming two Combat Patrol armies, terrain, boards, play aids, a Core Rulebook and introductory material. Its contents differ from earlier starter generations. For choosing between the current beginner boxes and the hobby tools they need, read the Warhammer 40K beginner guide .
The existing Starter Set purchase route should be checked against the exact current package and seller. Read our starter-set review for the separate two-player package decision. Do not buy both armies merely because the box is a common introduction if you only want a different faction.
Compare the actual hobby work
| Question | Evidence to inspect | Your decision |
|---|---|---|
| Models | Exact miniatures and assembly instructions | Do you want to build this collection? |
| Painting | Proposed scheme on a representative model | Does the process suit your interest and available time? |
| First games | Current rules for the intended mode | Can you obtain and learn the relevant material? |
| Budget | Box, required tools and planned additions | Which purchases are actually needed now? |
| Storage | Model sizes and appropriate transport | Can the assembled collection be kept and moved appropriately? |
There is no universal under-20-infantry threshold or one-color scheme that makes an army beginner-friendly. A smaller model count can still include complex assembly, detail or rules. A larger collection can be rewarding for someone who wants that hobby work.
Keep the game mode and rules current
Confirm whether the people you will play with use introductory games, Combat Patrol or another current mode. Check the exact army and unit rules rather than assigning every Space Marine, Necron, Ork or Tyranid collection the same simplicity or durability.
Rules, points and competitive strength change. A guide should not promise that a faction forgives a bad turn or wins more games without relevant evidence. Ask to observe or try the intended mode where a suitable opportunity exists.
Start with a collection you want to continue
Compare a representative assembly and paint plan before committing to extensive expansion. Treat batch painting, conversions and centerpiece models as preferences and requirements to assess, not universal stages every newcomer must follow.
If you consider used models, check their exact contents, condition and suitability for the intended rules. Do not assume a popular faction guarantees an easy resale or a deeper local trading market.
Choose the starting purchase whose models, game mode and continuing work fit your interests. Expand when you know what the next addition is for. This guide combines current package evidence with a comparison record; it does not report our own games, timed painting or a universal best first army.
